Understanding HDTV

There are a number of concepts and terms which need to be explained before we get into the entanglement of standards, definitions, acronyms and technical terms. The fundamentals of any video signal specifications (from 1950s onwards) include the following key parameters or concepts:

Resolution: the multitude of separate elements which form a complex viewable picture (a TV image in this instance). Technical questions aside, the higher the resolution, the better is the image in terms of accuracy of detail and overall sharpness.

Resolution is evaluated in two ways depending on the hardware technology which is “behind the screen”. For conventional TVs (CRT, aka “Tube TVs”) the resolution is determined by the number of left to right lines they can display. Plasmas, LCDs and the like (also referred to as “fixed pixel displays” due to the fact that the image is shown as an array of individually lit pixels rather than sequential lines) are evaluated by the actual number of effective pixels on the screen surface (normally given as X-number of pixels horizontally by Y-number of pixels vertically).

The ratio of vertical and horizontal pixel lines is not the same for all TV sets. Currently TV screens are available in two shapes (or aspect ratios): 4:3 (traditional) and 16:9 (wide-screen). Since most movies are wide-screen, 16:9 screens can display then without the “letter-box” bands on top and bottom of the screen. ALL HDTV sets are WIDE-SCREEN.

Regardless of the underlying “behind the screen” technology the image is created in lines which appear on the screen so fast that your eye does not simply catch the change (though you can see traces of that if you try shooting the TV image with a digital video camera). Generally there are two standard ways of producing these lines (scan types): interlaced (interchanging) scan –when every other row of lines is lit first – and progressive (simultaneous) scan – when all the lines are lit in the same instant for better (film-like) quality of image.

Since there is no single HDTV standard or specification (such as ATSC) we will limit this description to the one which is “regular” commercial HDTV and most commonly found on the market – that is the so called "720p", where "720" represents the number of lines of resolution with Progressive scan and a widescreen aspect ratio. In other words, if the content or the TV set itself is not at least 720p – it is not TRUE HDTV (even if the resolution is higher, like in 1080i-which is non-progressive scan). If a TV is a progressive-scan type but it cannot display at least 720 lines – it is not HDTV either (such as EDTV progressive-scan plasma sets which are not capable of producing 720 lines of resolution).
